The Due Pulcini in the historic centre of Monopoli was built in the early 1930s and is now being brought back to life by Anette and Matthias Hühnlein.
For more than 30 years we have been travelling around Italy with great enthusiasm. At the beginning it tended to be the north, which was easily accessible from our Bavarian home, even for a long weekend. Over the years our exploration tours, during which we had always been on the lookout for a suitable domicile of our own, went further and further south, until we finally arrived in Apulia in 2017.
From that moment on, Apulia became more and more our preferred destination. Year after year and longer and longer and more and more often. Then in 2021 we were in Monopoli for the first time and directly fell in love with this special place.
Nowhere else on our countless trips to Italy had we experienced a comparable place that combines everything we love so much about Italy in an ideal way.
A lively, almost authentic old town, directly on the sea with a beautiful city beach and the very best Apulian cuisine. The fact that friends of ours are restoring two ‚masserias‘ (traditional farmhouse complexes) just a few kilometres away and also want to spend more time there, certainly also played a role in our decision to embark on the Monopoli adventure and looking for a domicile here.
On 15 July 2022 the time had finally come and a long-cherished dream came true. The beletage of an old town house with almost five-metre high vaulted ceilings became our house by the sea. With a separate entrance and its own terrace above the rooftops of Monopoli. In other words, a house within a house.
Now the planning begins for its restoration and conversion into a stylish retreat with three bedrooms, kitchen, dining room, two bathrooms and a roof terrace with outdoor kitchen, combining the charm of the Italian Mid-Century with the present day.
